BLOC FESTIVAL 2012... OR NOT

So, today’s post was scheduled to be my review of Saturday at Bloc Festival 2012. Those of you based in the UK will have no doubt heard about the overcrowding nightmare festival-goers experienced on Friday which lead to a cancellation of the whole festival that night. I count myself lucky that I only had a ticket for the Saturday, and so didn’t get caught up in the chaos. It sounds like the decision to cancel was the right one and kudos to those who were there on Friday for reportedly keeping calm and trying to make the best of it.

What I’m finding frustrating is the different information we’re being given – was it shut down by the police or by the organiser’s health and safety team? Was it overcrowding through error or did the rain make the site unsuitable? And if it was to do with the rain, why weren't the organisers better prepared? It's not like there was no warning about bad weather! I hope they come to some kind of conclusion about what happened soon, there’s a lot of anger and frustration over the whole thing and that’s only going to get worse the longer we have to wait for an explanation.

It wasn’t all bad news though, once I heard that Bloc wasn’t happening on Saturday morning, I realised this meant I could go to my good friend Zosha’s Mad Men themed birthday party in London. So off I went for an evening of too much gin and some fabulous outfits followed by an AMAZING breakfast the next morning. Definitely softened the blow of festival failure!

So, in the absence of photos of people dancing the night away at London Pleasure Gardens, here’s a video for a show by one of the artists who DID get to play on the Friday, Amon Tobin. I saw the ISAM show at HMV Forum back in 2011 and it was truly incredible. Even if you’re not a fan of electronic music, the creativity, design and audio-visual experience make this well worth a watch.

Also, be sure to check out amazing artist Tessa Farmer, who did the cover art for the ISAM album (below).
